DESCRIPTIÓN
Quillay or Quillaja Saponaria
Quillay (in mapudungun küllay) is an evergreen endemic tree from chilean Central zone. It’s bark is dark gray, the leaves are simple, alternate, short petiole, oblong, with a border almost smooth and light green. The Quillay is native from Chile, where it is found growing wild from Coquimbo to Malleco, in Central Valley and both mountain ranges.
It is a natural foamer due to its high saponin content which has various technical applications for different fields, its a strong natural biorepellent, emulsifier, natural surfactant added to vaccines, non alcoholic beers, veterinary applications and animal feed.
BENEFITS
It can be added to various products for example metal polishing and drilling lubricant products, for external use emulsions preparations as well as to keep in suspension insoluble and protective colloidal materials. It is used in photography and cosmetics, toothpastes and hair products for it produces a very stable foam. Most of these uses are justified by saponin´s property to lower the surface tension of solutions containing them.
Quillaja triterpenic saponins act as natural foaming agents that offer a real alternative to synthetic surfactants
